Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma
in Sports Coaching and Development


Programme Overview

This full-time, two-year qualification is equivalent to three A Levels and is designed to prepare students for
progression to university or a career in the sports industry. Delivered at LILA* College / David Game College
Liverpool with on-pitch training from the Steven Gerrard Academy, students gain academic knowledge and
elite coaching experience.

Year 1 Units

  • Unit A: Careers in the Sport and Active Leisure Industry
  • Unit B: Health, Wellbeing and Sport
  • Unit C1: Developing Coaching Skills
  • Unit 1: Sports Development
  • Unit 2: Self-employment in Sport and Physical Activity
  • Unit 12: Practical Sports Application

Year 2 Units

  •  Unit D1: Applied Coaching Skills (180 GLH)
  • Unit E: Research Project in Sport (120 GLH)
  • Unit 5: Anatomy and Physiology (60 GLH)
  • Unit 8: Fitness Testing (60 GLH)
  • Unit 6: Sports Injuries (60 GLH)
  • Unit 14: Organising Events in Sport and Physical Activities (60 GLH

Assessment Style

Students are assessed through a mix of internally assessed assignments and externally assessed units.
Assessment encourages application of knowledge in real-world coaching and sports contexts, focusing on
planning, delivery, and reflection
