Young Adults (16-17)

New students

If you are aged 16-17, you can join one of our adult courses as a young adult with parental consent. This means you can study all year round and you can book your course as an individual or as part of a group.

Alternatively, you can book onto a junior programme as part of a group. These courses are designed for students aged 12-17 and are available during the summer or out of season.

Key information for young adult students

As a young adult, students will mix with students aged 18+ during their time with us and whilst they are welcomed onto an adult course we have put some extra support in place to cater to their age.

We are now doing more than ever to ensure the safety, welfare and enjoyment of our young adults at LILA*.

We will ensure that you will receive all pre-arrival information two weeks before your course start date.

If you have a late booking request (within two weeks of the student’s requested start date), please get in touch with us to see if we can accommodate this. However, we cannot guarantee availability for young adults at this short notice.

At LILA*, we’ve been working on having a seamless line of communication with parents, hosts and our students. Our young adult agreement is available in multiple languages to ensure our students’ parents can feel confident and assured about their child’s welfare.

In order to ensure all of our students’ safety, here are some key bits of information that parents will be asked to provide:

  • If they consent to LILA* hosts providing some common over-the-counter medicines (e.g. paracetamol or cough syrup) unless the parents warn us of allergies or of any medicines that we should avoid
  • To give their approval for safe, overnight stays their child wishes to arrange outside of their homestay

Safeguarding for young adults

  • Can access adult programmes with parental consent
  • Can attend our social programme unaccompanied/unsupervised if age appropriate For example walking tours, museum visits and weekend excursions to local cities
  • Can travel by public transport to other areas outside of Liverpool IF safeguarding deems it’s safe and reasonable to do so and with parental consent (restrictions may be put in place as deemed appropriate)
  • Will be mixed with adults
  • May have no supervision when not on a LILA* scheduled activity
  • LILA* has to book airport transfers for all Young Adults (£85 one way from Manchester Airport and £40 one way from Liverpool John Lennon Airport), unless they are accompanied by a family guardian on arrival
  • Must be in accommodation by 11pm every night with no exception
  • Must not stay overnight anywhere but their allocated accommodation. In special circumstances overnight stays that are not in approved accommodation must be approved by LILA’s safeguarding team prior to booking. The decision of the safeguarding team may override parental consent
  • Must not buy or consume alcohol, cigarettes or other illegal substances

Additional level of care

At LILA*, we have a healthy focus on the safety and welfare of young people.

LILA* staff will be informed of which students are ‘young adults’ as we know that it can sometimes be an overwhelming time whilst settling into a new school/country.

For this reason, we offer an additional level of care including:

  • Additional induction for young adults with a specific young adult focus
  • Weekly welfare checks with the safeguarding team
  • Access to 24-hour emergency contact
  • Coloured lanyards to identify young adults to staff and other students
  • Parent contact details are obtained to ensure regular contact if needed

Dedicated young adult contacts in the school:

  • Laurie Daley
  • Victoria Bligh
  • Jim Pearson

As soon as our young adults book a course they will be provided with our young adult welcome pack.

This gives students and parents all the key information about:

  • Preparing for your trip
  • What to expect on arrival
  • Parental agreement
  • Student code of conduct
  • Time at LILA* – course, accommodation & activities
  • Life in the UK
